BIG HEARTS for little hearts Golf Tournament
Sept. 17, 2007 proved to be a great day for golfing and a wonderful day for children in northeast Kansas. A round of golf was enjoyed 144 golfers who raised money for the Children’s Endowment Fund.
Proceeds from the tournament help support important services and programs dedicated to children served by Stormont-Vail HealthCare. Such services include the only Level III Neonatal IntensiveCare unit in the region and the Birthplace where more than 2,200 babies are born every year. Other programs and services include the Breastfeeding Clinic, a 20-bed pediatric unit, the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner/Sexual Assault Response Team Program, which treats an average of 50 children every year, and the Child/Adolescent Inpatient Behavioral Medicine Program at Stormont-Vail West.
The eighth annual BIG HEARTS for little hearts tournament will be Sept. 15, 2008 at the Topeka Country Club. For more information contact Linda Kehres at (785) 354-5995.

2008 Care Line Campaign
The Care Line, established in 1992 by Stormont-Vail Foundation, helps to meet the emergency medical needs of patients who have exhausted all other resources. Assistance provided through the Care Line can be in the form of prescription medication, temporary lodging, transportation, meals, clothing and durable medical equipment.
The Care Line is funded solely by charitable contributions through a public campaign and an annual employee giving campaign. Details on both campaigns are listed below.
Friends of The Care Line Campaign
The 7th annual “Friends of the Care Line” public campaign will kick off in March 2008 raising money for the Care Line Endowment.
Donors making gifts of $1,000 or more in support of the Care Line are recognized on a scroll prominently displayed in the Registration area at Stormont-Vail HealthCare. For more information or to make a donation, contact the Foundation at (785) 354-6851.
Joy of Caring Employee Giving Campaign
The 15th annual Joy of Caring employee giving campaign begins in the spring of 2008. Many Stormont-Vail employees draw on Care Line funds to help their patients in need, so they understand the importance of giving financial support to the Care Line. Funds are used as a last resort to help patients in need who have nowhere else to turn. For more information or to make a donation, contact the Foundation at (785) 354-6851.
Bal Jeffrey Award
Meals on Wheels of Shawnee and Jefferson Counties, recipient of the 2007 Bal Jeffrey Award was honored at a dinner held at the Ramada Hotel and Convention Center Oct. 11, 2007. The award named for Balfour S. Jeffrey, Stormont-Vail’s longest tenured board member, recognizes individuals or groups of individuals who have made significant contributions to healthcare in northeast Kansas.
Guests were welcomed with opening remarks from Maynard Oliverius, president and CEO of Stormont-Vail HealthCare, and Don Schepker, president and executive director of the Stormont-Vail Foundation. Rev. Roger Neufeld Smith presented the invocation.
Master of Ceremonies Vernon Long introduced the guest speakers. Nancy Perry with the United Way of Greater Topeka began her remarks by saying she remembered when the Junior League provided a $5,000 grant to Mobile Meals of Topeka, Inc., in 1972 to help start the agency. She went on to describe the role Meals on Wheels plays in her own personal life, with her in-laws receiving home delivered meals. Mrs. Perry ended by saying that “she knew Bal Jeffrey, and that he would be proud to have Meals on Wheels and Stormont-Vail as partners for this award.”
Dr. Barlett Ramsey described his admiration for the Meals on Wheels organization through the various roles he has played, first in the late 1970’s helping with Sumptuous Settings, to volunteering and then to becoming a board member in 2000. Dr. Ramsey commented that when he had surgery the elderly people that he delivered meals to were genuinely concerned about his health. He said, "Meals on Wheels is not just about feeding people."
Kansas Secretary of Aging Kathy Greenlee spoke of the number of Kansans in nursing homes, commenting that all seniors have something in common: they would rather be home. Ms. Greenlee said that Meals on Wheels provides “people with a choice and the option to stay in their home.”
Jane Metzger, president and CEO of Meals on Wheels of Shawnee and Jefferson Counties, accepted the award and said, "he Meals on Wheels family" is truly honored to receive the Bal Jeffrey Award.” Mrs. Metzger thanked the volunteers and said that volunteer hours provided equated to 22 full-time employees.
The Stormont-Vail Foundation is pleased to recognize Meals on Wheels of Shawnee and Jefferson Counties as the 2007 Bal Jeffery recipient!
