David W. Lutes, M.D. | Peter J. Tutuska, M.D.

Leaders in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery

The Adult Cardiac Surgery Program was recently awarded the highest designation of three-stars for its cardiac surgical program. This is the third consecutive time this program and its clinicians have received this designation. The top tier, three-star rating for adult cardiac surgery is awarded by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) to hospitals across the country that meet the data driven rating system that the STS has developed. Approximately 10 percent of adult cardiac surgery programs receive the three-star rating, which denotes the highest category of quality.

Surgery specialties include:

  • Ablation of Atrial Fibrillation
  • Endovascular repair of Thoracic and Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
  • Radio-frequency Ablation of Varicose Veins (VNUS Closure Procedure)
  • Sclerotherapy
  • Micro-invasive Thoracic Sympathectomy
  • IVC Filter Placement
  • Peripheral Angiogram and Stenting
  • Peripheral Vascular and Carotid Surgery
  • Lung Cancer and Infections (Video Assisted)
  • Esophageal Surgery
  • Heart Surgery, including: Off-pump and minimally invasive options

The Society of Thoracic Surgeons has recently developed a comprehensive rating system that allows for comparisons regarding the quality of cardiac surgery among hospitals across the country. Approximately 14 percent of hospitals receive the "3-star" rating, which denotes the highest category of quality. In the current analysis of national data covering the period from July 2007 through June 2008, the cardiac surgery performance of Stormont-Vail HealthCare was found to lie in the highest quality tier, thereby receiving an Society of Thoracic Surgeons 3-star rating.
