Level III Neonatal IntensiveCare

Neonatal IntensiveCare at Stormont-Vail HealthCare, the region’s only Level III NIC, was founded on a tradition of compassionate, expert care for critical babies in 1985. The unit’s breakthrough wheel-shaped design offers the staff unparalleled opportunities to meet the special needs of our tiniest patients and their families with a unique blend of tenderness and technology.

The unit offers 27 spacious private rooms, specially designed to accommodate the latest neonatal care equipment used today and in the future. From a central nursing station, all babies can be monitored and cared for individually quiet, light-controlled, private environments that enhance the little ones’ ability to thrive.

When the department was redesigned in 2005, particular attention was invested in meeting the needs of families and facilitating their involvement in the care and growth of their babies. Stormont-Vail Neonatal IntensiveCare is designed to offer families privacy, comfortable in-room visiting space and personal storage areas. Overnight space is available for parents to stay in preparation to care for their baby at home. A separate family entrance in each patient area allows families to come and go without feeling they are “in the way.”

The unit is staffed with three neonatologists, three neonatal nurse practitioners, and two social workers along with a dedicated, experienced nursing staff.

Referring physicians are a key part of our treatment team with whom communication is vital. Regular updates are sent to referring physicians to keep them informed of their patient’s progress.

Parent Services
Stormont-Vail not only believes in caring for the neonate, but for the family as well. Various parent support services are provided, including:

• Extensive, flexible visiting hours for family
• Sleep rooms for families of critical patients
• Sleep rooms for families to stay with their infant overnight prior to going home
• Access to the Ronald McDonald House
• Grief and loss support

Even after discharge, the Neonatal IntensiveCare staff offers support for parents through follow-up clinics for infants at risk of developmental delays. Our clinic team of neonatologist or neonatal nurse practitioner, NIC nurse, occupational therapist, and social worker follows at-risk infants up to two years.
