Pediatrics/Adolescent Department

The Pediatric/Adolescent Unit at Stormont-Vail centers around family care, because hospitalization can be stressful for the entire family. The staff takes special care to alleviate children’s and parents’ fears. Pre-hospitalization tours are available for those planning elective surgery.
During the tour, the child and family see firsthand the workings of the department, and staff explains the process for the day of surgery from admission to discharge. A children’s video demonstrates the equipment the patient will see the day of surgery.
Once admitted to the hospital, a well-stocked playroom helps alleviate the child’s stress of surgery. Older children can use several VCRs and Nintendo games in the department. The department provides overnight accommodations for parents to stay at the child’s bedside.
