Stormont-Vail HealthCare volunteers have served a vital role in the day-to-day operations of the hospital for many decades. Volunteers continue to provide valuable time and services that assists the professional staff in performing their professional skills with maximum efficiency and effectiveness.
Duke Dougan Heart Center Cardiac Rehab
“My reasons for volunteering are two-fold. First, I am in a position where I can volunteer a lot. And, since I’ve been through heart surgery, I can have the empathy to encourage others who are going through the same thing.”
Connie Nordstrom Surgery Waiting Room
“I’ve been blessed with good health. Volunteering is one way I can give back to help others. I am a caregiver at heart.”
About Volunteer Services
The Volunteer Services Department is responsible for the overall management of volunteers and the implementation of volunteer support throughout Stormont-Vail HealthCare.
The Volunteer Services office provides a centralized system for effectively incorporating volunteers into all aspects of the hospital and clinics, and to support and enhance the mission of Stormont-Vail HealthCare “working together to improve the health of our community.”
Volunteer Services is committed to providing meaningful volunteer opportunities for members of the community. In doing so, we strive to enhance and support the vision of Stormont-Vail HealthCare to be a top-rated hospital and be nationally recognized for excellence.
The goal of Volunteer Services is three-fold: to provide volunteers that can assist hospital staff, releasing staff members to perform essential duties that only they can perform; for those volunteers to give a greater personal dimension to the delivery of healthcare; and for those volunteers to serve as ambassadors and liaisons between Stormont-Vail HealthCare and the community it serves.
Volunteer Services continually strives to improve communication, training and education for all volunteers and hospital staff regarding the volunteer program. The effective and creative integration of volunteers into the total human resources system of Stormont-Vail HealthCare is vital in meeting the goals of the hospital. It is imperative to continually develop volunteer programs to meet the changing needs of hospital departments, individuals and the community at large.
It is essential to recognize the efforts and contributions of all volunteers and to provide them with an opportunity for both personal and professional development. Individuals who participate in volunteer programs are given the opportunity to acquire new skills and knowledge, develop new interests; expand their social and personal suppport networks; and derive satisfaction from assisting others through compassion and understanding.
Brandon Carney, college student
“To this day, I recall completing my first volunteer shift in the Emergency Department and feeling nothing but pure excitement and a strong yearning to immediately return. My experiences at Stormont-Vail have been encouraging and enlightening in every possible way. What I have attained in experience will continue working towards my goal of becoming a cardiovascular surgeon.”
