Stand up and Be Counted

In mid-March, homes across the country will begin receiving invitations to complete the 2020 Census. While it’s easy to write this invitation off as junk mail or place it at the bottom of your to-do list, your participation in the census is vital for so many reasons. Here are three reasons why your answers matter.

      1. Redistricting
The U.S. Constitution mandates that the country count its population once every 10 years. The results of this census are then used to adjust or redraw electoral districts, based on where populations have increased or decreased.A state’s population directly affects the number of representatives it has in the United States House of Representatives. California, the highest populated state in the union, has 53 representatives, whereas Wyoming, the least populated state, only has one. Kansas has four representatives. By participating in the 2020 Census, you could help Kansas gain more!
      2. Funding
The results of the 2020 Census will inform decisions regarding federal funding. Through the census, hundreds of billions of dollars will be used to fund hospitals, fire departments, school lunch programs and other critical programs and services.More funding for hospitals means Stormont Vail Health can increase services and extend our reach further into the communities we serve, resulting in more people helped.
      3. Business Decisions
The 2020 Census will be valuable to businesses, as the results will provide valuable insights on the communities they serve, including population trends and growth projections.
Business owners rely on census results to make decisions, such as where to open new stores, restaurants, factories or offices. These new locations and businesses will not only provide more things to do in town, but also increase jobs and number of tourist visitors – meaning more money for our community.

As a population health organization, Stormont Vail is committed to improving the health of our community through Food Security, Health Equity, Education, and Economic Vitality. The success of these services are determined by the results of the 2020 Census. Your participation in the census ensures we can continue to provide the highest quality care possible. Together, we can make a lasting impact in our community that will positively impact generations to come.
