Cardiac Rehabilitation Program
The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at the Stormont Vail Cardiac Imaging and Rehabilitation Center program helps people with a cardiac illness get back to healthy living.
The program is designed to:
- Limit the physiological and psychological effects of cardiac illness.
- Reduce the risk for sudden death or relapse.
- Control cardiac symptoms.
- Stabilize and/or improve the patient's condition.
- Enhance the patient's quality of life.
The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program is certified for its Cardiac Rehabilitation Program by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR).
Through a six- to-12-week program, patients learn about good dietary habits and risk factor modification, begin an exercise program and participate in group discussions. In most cases, patients involved in a rehabilitation program are able to return to an active lifestyle with few limitations.
Cardiac rehabilitation begins upon admission to the hospital and follows through recovery to a life of healthy living. The Comeback Squad is staffed by an enthusiastic support group that actively strives to help patients reduce their cardiovascular risk factors, which may include:
- High blood pressure
- Elevated blood cholesterol
- Lack of exercise
- Improper diet
- Being overweight
- Inability to cope with stress
The first phase begins while you are still hospitalized and puts you on the road toward recovery. Through individual counseling and written materials you learn how to modify the risk factors affecting the development of heart disease. Physical conditioning begins at your bedside to increase tolerance for daily activities. Our staff will inform you of cardiac rehabilitation facilities near your home.
The second phase allows you to immediately apply the knowledge gained in Phase I. The classes are conducted at the Stormont Vail Cardiac Imaging and Rehabilitation Center, one of the finest cardiac rehabilitation facilities in the Midwest. You begin to see and feel the positive results of modifying risk factors and learn to examine your lifestyle for further risk potential. You come to the Stormont Vail Cardiac Imaging and Rehabilitation Center three days a week for cardiac conditioning and join a weekly education class with other participants and family members.
For your safety, you wear a telemetry device during your conditioning sessions, which allows the staff to monitor your heart activity. The recommended length of this program is six to 12 weeks.
Conditioning sessions are held Monday's, Wednesday's and Friday's. Medicare and most health insurance policies cover a portion of outpatient cardiac rehabilitation. We encourage you to check with your insurance company if you have concerns.
The third phase is an option for individuals who have completed Phase II or if you have any of the following:
- Known coronary artery disease
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Peripheral vascular disease
- Multiple heart disease risk factors
The program is an independent exercise opportunity, supervised by an exercise physiologist. Other support staff is available to assist with your health and dietary concerns.
Phase III Program Hours:
- Monday, Wednesday and Friday Noon to 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.
- Tuesday and Thursday 8 a.m. to Noon and 1:15 to 5 p.m.
The cost for the Phase III program is generally not covered by insurance.
