Shared Governance

Professional nurses at Stormont Vail have a voice, as well as control, authority and influence. That’s because our nurses set goals and priorities – and participate in decisions relevant to nursing practice through our structure of shared governance. Shared governance provides the structure for nurses to share, learn and collaborate, identify and integrate best practices, and enjoy a fulfilling career.

We do this through a Shared Governance Council Structure. Our councils include:

  • Coordinating
  • Communications
  • Management
  • Performance Improvement
  • Practice
  • Professional Development
  • Research

In addition, some work areas have unit or department councils to provide shared governance at that level.

Shared governance promotes a culture of nurse empowerment, providing bedside nurses with an environment that fosters autonomy and evidence-based decision making. Shared governance is also vital to the recruitment and retention of highly qualified nurses who value professional development – and mentorship of the next generation of nurses.

The core belief behind a shared governance structure is that patients are best served when practice decisions are made by the health care team members closest to their side. Stormont Vail nurses are the care managers for patients, taking the lead in advancing the interdisciplinary care process, while partnering with patients and their family members throughout the patient’s care experience. The shared governance structure supports this partnership, while fostering professional accountability and nursing autonomy.

Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice

The shared governance structure at Stormont Vail facilitates the advancement of nursing research. Our Nursing Research Council facilitates all research efforts through assessment, intervention, evaluation and revision of approaches as appropriate. The Patient Care Services department promotes the use of evidence-based research and best practices. Our nurses believe that evidence-based practice provides the foundation for sound decisions based on research implementation, practice changes and evaluation of effectiveness, all of which result in better patient outcomes.
