A Heartwarming Journey at Stormont Vail Health Flint Hills Campus Birthplace

Jeff Coots and Kathy Dwight’s lives took an unexpected turn when they discovered they were going to have their first child together. Their journey is a testament to the incredible care and support they received at Stormont Vail Health Flint Hills Campus' Birthplace.

How It Began

It all started with two at-home pregnancy tests. Kathy had a hunch that something was different, so she decided to take the tests. "After missing my monthly visitor, I took an at-home test to confirm my feeling," Kathy recalls. "I was in shock."

Jeff also remembers the moment when Kathy shared the news with him, "Kathy had informed me in November that our little family would now be a little bigger. Initially, I was a little shocked, and it took a little time to accept this change for sure."

As soon-to-be parents, Jeff and Kathy knew that finding the right care was essential. They wanted a female provider, and their search led them to Certified Nurse Midwife Terrah Stroda, affiliated with Stormont Vail Flint Hills Campus.

"From the moment we met on our first visit, it felt like we were chatting with an old friend," Kathy said. "Terrah made us feel right at home and ensured we understood every step of the journey."

Pregnancy was a whirlwind of emotions for both Jeff and Kathy.

"Watching Kathy's bump grow, I was in shock and didn't quite know how to feel," Jeff admits. Kathy adds, "It was an incredible experience, but I had a tough first few months. CNM Terrah was my rock during those times. She understood my worries and provided the support I needed at every visit."

Working with a midwife like Terrah brought them immense benefits. Terrah Stroda prides herself in always keeping patients informed and making them feel like they are her top priority, no matter her workload.

Time for Delivery

The big day finally arrived at Stormont Vail Flint Hills Campus. Kathy was in labor for about 18 hours, and it was an emotional rollercoaster.

"It all started so quickly but then came to an abrupt halt," Kathy recalled. "After about 12 hours, the possibility of a cesarean section loomed over us. I wasn't ready for that, and Terrah supported me every step of the way. In the end, I had a vaginal delivery with Terrah's guidance. Jeff was there, too, assisting with the process thanks to Terrah's expert coaching."

Their journey brought them the greatest gift – their newborn son, Jackson. Kathy affectionately describes him, "Jackson was a tiny bundle of joy in terms of weight, but he was impressively long. He had a sweet tuft of blonde hair, but it was his big blue eyes that stole our hearts. He's growing like a champ, now weighing a solid 12 pounds at just seven weeks."

Looking Back at the Journey

Reflecting on their experience, Jeff and Kathy have some advice for new parents; they want to ensure you trust Stormont Vail with your entire care journey. They highly recommend the entire Labor and Delivery team and Well Woman’s department, but especially Terrah Stroda, Certified Nurse Midwife.

Their heartwarming journey at Stormont Vail Flint Hills Campus' Birthplace is a testament to the warmth, expertise, and dedication provided to families during this extraordinary chapter of life.
