In some patients, the drainage mechanism of the eye is too narrow. A laser is used to create a small hole or change the drainage to reduce the risk of elevation of pressure. While this cannot reverse current damage, it can prevent further damage.

Diabetic disease can cause leakage from vessels in the retina. Using a laser, leaking blood vessels are treated, allowing for reduction of swelling in the retina. In some cases the laser is used to reduce the growth of abnormal blood vessels due to stress of diabetes on the eye.

There is more to glaucoma diagnosis and treatment than just the eye pressure. Part of a complete workup includes evaluation of the peripheral field of vision and examination of the optic nerve.

There are many options for treatment of dry eyes, from new medication to help increase tear production to punctual plugs to help retain the tears already produced. In severe cases we use amniotic membrane grafts to help grow new skin on the cornea.

A tissue called “amniotic membrane” is used in treatment of infections in the cornea to help reduce inflammation and promote wound healing. As mentioned above it is also used widely in the treatment of dry eyes.
