Stormont Vail Health provides a number of parenting programs and childbirth preparation programs. These include tours of The Birthplace. Breastfeeding Basics and other classes to support mothers who are breastfeeding are also offered.

Breastfeeding Basics

This informal introduction to breastfeeding will provide pregnant women and their families an opportunity to learn all they need to know about breastfeeding before their baby is born.

    Classes designed to help families prepare for the breastfeeding experience by providing information on how breastfeeding works, how to get started, problems that may arise and how to incorporate breastfeeding and working.

    Part 2: (45 min) Features Ashley Seematter, RN, Instructor, at Baker School of Nursing and Stormont Vail Health Birthplace Nurse. In the online video, you will learn about the hands-on skills for breastfeeding basics, latch-on and positioning, as well as learning about the equipment you might use or experience while breastfeeding.

Pumping

This online class provides basic information and suggestions about pumping your milk. It is designed for any mother who is going to express her milk. You may watch the class more than once.

  • Learn More

    Information on returning to work, storage of milk, and common concerns are reviewed. The handout “Pumping for your Baby” provides an excellent reference about returning to work and pumping and information for childcare providers. You are encouraged to call the Breastfeeding Center at (785) 354-5034 with questions or email Libby Rosen at lrosen@stormontvail.org. No registration needed.

Childbirth Preparation

Learn breathing and relaxation skills plus information is provided on other pain control measures. Included is information on late pregnancy, labor and birth, early parenting experience and a tour of Stormont Vail Birthplace.

Childbirth Preparation for Parents Having Cesarean Deliveries

Whether this is your first cesarean section or you are having a repeat cesarean section, your delivery is an event we would like to help you prepare for. You will find out what to expect from admission to dismissal.

    We will watch films, show slides, have an open discussion, practice breathing and relaxation techniques, and tour Stormont Vail Birthplace. Participants need to meet the instructor in the Birthplace Conference Room on 4-North before class.

Welcome Baby

This three-hour class will consist of updated information for the whole family. Such topics include an overview of basic infant care incorporating breastfeeding, bathing techniques, diapering, swaddling, car seat information.

    Sleep safety, access to community resources and babywearing (slings). One segment will be dedicated to dads. This will be an opportunity for dads to discuss their questions about fatherhood among other men with a dad who has been in your shoes. Finally, adjustment to parenthood and grandparenthood as well as nurturing your relationship with your support person will be covered in this class. Mothers are welcome to bring their support person, family or a friend who provides support during their pregnancy and beyond.

Baby Jubilee

Welcome Baby Jubilee, an event that showcases the Stormont Vail Birthplace, Breastfeeding Clinic and Neonatal Intensive Care.

Parenting Classes

Sibling Class (for children 2-5 years old)

Previously named “And Baby Makes Four or More,” this class will include a tour of the Birthplace and have some structured activities to help young children verbalize their concerns and expectations about when “the new baby comes.”

    This class is for children for 2-5 yrs of age who will soon be big brothers and big sisters and their parents. Your child is the one to be enrolled. List the parent’s name under “support person.”

Sibling Class (for children 6 years and older)

Boy to Man

Boys experience puberty also and while usually starting later than girls, the time in a boys life between the ages of 10-13 is filled with many physical and emotional changes.

Please call  Professor Libby Rosen, Ph.D., RN if you are interested in attending the Boy to Man or Girl to Woman classes.     These changes are exciting, but also are often puzzling, sometimes embarrassing, and usually challenging to a young adolescent. Join us for a discussion that will focus on the physiological changes of puberty, the developmental tasks of early adolescence and ways to improve communication between boys and their parents. This class features a time for boys and their parents to be together but also have time for facilitated discussion separately.

    Fee: $25 for each parent/child duo; $12.50 for each additional sibling. Payment is collected at class.

Girl to Woman

The time in a girls life between the ages of 8-12 is one of physical and emotional changes.

Please call  Professor Libby Rosen, Ph.D., RN if you are interested in attending the Boy to Man or Girl to Woman classes.     This program for girls and their parent will address menstruation and other physical changes of puberty, the emotional upheaval of adolescence and communication techniques for parent and daughter.

Sibling at Birth

This is an individually scheduled, one-on-one session with a sibling and support person to explain labor and delivery. We will discuss details of delivery to ensure the sibling is of a maturity level to appropriately deal with the experience. A class completion certificate is required to attend the delivery.
