I’m Dr. Baum. I’m a gastroenterologist here at the Cotton O’Neil Digestive Health Center.

Why did you choose to work at Stormont Vail Health?

I had always wanted to practice in a multispecialty group practice. And a number of the members of my medical school class were also practicing here.

What procedures do you specialize in?

If you’re an adult with a gut problem, you’re going to want to see a gastroenterologist.

Gastroenterologists are proceduralists, and so a gastroenterologist can do a variety of procedures. What I basically do is upper endoscopy, also known as EGD, and colonoscopy.

How would you describe what a typical patient is experiencing when they first come to you?

I see quite a few patients that come in for a screening colonoscopy. Those are healthy individuals who turn 50 and elect to have a screening colonoscopy. Those patients are typically anxious, worried. They’re afraid I’m going to find something, and sometimes we do. But more often than not, when we find something, it’s a polyp, or a growth that can be removed, and in that fashion, dramatically lower that patient’s risk of developing colon cancer.

Why should patients trust you with their care?

I think patients should know that they’re going to get really good care here. … Taking a team approach, which is what we emphasize here, you’re going to get our best effort at getting you to feel better.
