Hi, I’m Katy Black. I’m an APRN and I work here at the clinic in Carbondale.
What is it that you enjoy about working in a family practice setting?
I like the idea of family practice because I like to see all kinds of patients. I like to see everything from new babies, to elderly, to new parents, to people in that retirement age. I like the variety, I like seeing entire families and seeing how they work together on their health. I enjoy seeing a little bit of everything.
What is your role as an APRN?
My role as an APRN here in Carbondale is to see pretty much anyone who walks in the door as one of our patients in the clinic. I will see patients for Dr. Penn or Dr. Bondurant, and I also have my own patients that I manage their care on independently. We work really well together as a team, and we try to make sure everyone can be seen in a nice timeframe. So a lot of times, I’ll see people who need to be seen more quickly or get in sooner.
What conditions and illnesses do you treat in your office?
Some of the things we do for primary care would be well-child checks, physicals, we treat diabetes, high blood pressure. A lot of chronic illnesses as well as acute things like respiratory infections, asthma flare, sprained ankles, broken arms, and then we make sure people get all the care that they need.
What is it that you enjoy the most about working in a small-town clinic?
I think it’s special to have the clinic in Carbondale because we’re able to interact not only with our patients here in the office, but then I’ll see them at the grocery store, at the gas station, and at their basketball games. You really get to see more than you would at a normal office visit or setting. It’s really neat for me to see folks in a more personal way throughout the community.
