Addressing Food Insecurity for Our Community

Stormont Vail Health is deeply committed to tackling the issue of food insecurity within our community.

Dana Blindt, MSN, BA, RN, Director of Care Transformation & Ambulatory Care Management at Stormont Vail, emphasizes the team’s dedication, saying, “We are here to provide unwavering support and resources to individuals facing food insecurity.”

What is Food Insecurity:

Dana Blindt defines food insecurity as “the distressing situation when individuals lack reliable access to healthy and nutritious food resources.” She highlights that it can manifest as short-term needs or long-standing challenges faced by our community members. She explains, “We witness its effects in various ways, from compromised diet quality and disrupted eating patterns to individuals having to make agonizing choices between buying food or fulfilling other essential needs such as utility bills or medical expenses.”

Linking Food Insecurity and Health:

Recognizing the profound connection between food insecurity and health outcomes, Stormont Vail empathizes with individuals who are faced with difficult decisions. “We firmly understand that food insecurity increases the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, pre-diabetes or diabetes, high blood pressure, and mental health disorders,” says Dana. “Among children, food insecurity can have profound effects on their educational and developmental outcomes, which deeply concerns us.”

Community Resources and Support:

Stormont Vail is dedicated to providing extensive resources for food challenges on the community resources page. This page serves as a valuable hub of information, offering comprehensive support not only for food assistance but also for transportation, utility bills, and other essential needs.

For additional resources and information about food insecurity, you can refer to organizations like Feeding America and No Kid Hungry. These organizations provide valuable insights and initiatives to address hunger and food insecurity across the United States.

Through proactive care, advocacy, and unwavering support, Stormont Vail is striving to make a difference in the lives of our neighbors, working towards a healthier, more resilient community.
