About

I’m Seshu Rao. I’m one of the cardiologists and I work at the Cotton O’Neil Heart Center.

What procedures do you specialize in?

Some of the procedures that I specialize in are coronary interventions, especially acute heart attacks, and also people with chronic total occlusions, which are arteries that are blocked for long periods of time.

Some of the other advances that we’re doing here at Stormont Vail: transcatheter aortic valve replacement — I do these procedures with Dr. Jones and the cardiothoracic team — that is one of the greatest advances here in recent times.

One of the newest procedures we’ve started is the left atrial appendage closure — the Watchman Device. Dr. Shah and myself do these together. This, I think, is going to grow leaps and bounds. People can come off their blood thinners and they can travel, they can eat what they want, they don’t have to be bound to a clinic to get their blood tested. They don’t have to worry about nicking their skin — going about and trying to be active and be worried about bleeding. So that is one of the biggest things that we’re really excited about.

Why did you choose to work at Stormont Vail Health?

One of the main reasons I picked Stormont Vail during my interview trail was the group. The group of cardiologists at Stormont, during my interview, really did everything that I wanted to do. I think they struck a perfect balance between work and family. I have three little kids, and one of my priorities is to spend a good amount of time with them.

Why should patients trust you with their care?

I think that there’s a lot of things we do in cardiology that affect people’s lives in a positive way. One of the biggest things that we learn in training is to try to treat patients how you would want to be treated — if it were your own family member: your father, your grandfather, your grandmother — the kind of respect and the kind of empathy that you would show to them, you would want to show to your patients. I believe in that a lot.
