Christina Barker Helps Shark Attack Victim, Honored as Person of the Moment
We want to offer congratulations to our August Person of the Moment, Christina Barker, RN! Not only does Christina give her all every day at Stormont Vail Health, but she takes her training and passion beyond the walls of our hospital.

While leading a Youth Mission Trip to Monterey, California, a great white shark attacked a swimmer while Christina and the group were on the beach. Without hesitation, she put her training as a trauma response nurse into action and helped to create a tourniquet out of shirts while also helping lead non-medical personnel who were there perform other life-saving activities.

Because of Christina’s swift action along with others who were on the beach, the injured swimmer was transferred to a trauma center, received extensive treatment, and is recovering well after being attacked by a 17-foot great white.

“We are in awe of Christina’s bravery, leadership, and humility, and are so proud and thankful to have her as a part of the SVH family,” said Barker’s teammates.

You can hear Christina’s chilling experience tonight on WIBW’s To Your Health segment at 10 p.m. She talks about why she is thankful she was there, how she keeps up with the swimmer today, what she’s learned from this experience, and what everyone can do to be prepared to help anyone who is severely bleeding.

We are so grateful to have Christina on our team. Thank you for being such an outstanding nurse and person, Christina! Congratulations!

The WIBW segment will air at 10 p.m. on WIBW-TV, Channel 13. The segment will typically repeat at 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. Fridays on 13 News This Morning and be posted on wibw.com.

Mayo Clinic Care Network’s Annual Visit Sept. 14
Stormont Vail Health will host representatives of Mayo Clinic next Wednesday, Sept. 14, as part of our annual visit by the Mayo Clinic Care Network. Stormont Vail Health has been a member of the network since 2014.

The Mayo Clinic Care Network is a select group of independent health systems carefully vetted by Mayo Clinic and granted special access to Mayo’s knowledge, expertise and resources. As part of the network, Stormont Vail Health providers can quickly access Mayo’s latest research, diagnostic and treatment resources whenever they feel it will benefit their patients.

Mayo Clinic representatives will meet with several Stormont Vail groups Sept. 14. Following a session with Operating Committee, they will provide a Mayo Clinic Care Network Tools Orientation to all Stormont Vail managers, directors, medical directors and lead Advance Practice Providers. This will be provided in-person and through WebEx.

Mayo Clinic Care Network Medical Director Mark Larson, M.D. and Vice Chair Dan Roline will share information about the powerful clinical collaboration and how it benefits Stormont Vail Health patients, staff, providers, and the communities we serve. They will discuss how to access and leverage the solutions and services available through our relationship to amplify our expertise and increase our competitive edge as we work toward achieving our clinical, operational and business goals.

Other sessions will be about leadership development programs, nursing excellence and the Mayo Clinic Platform that helps to solve some of the most pressing problems around patient care using data science and technologies.

Outreach Clinics in Manhattan to Temporarily Move to Junction City
Beginning October 2022, Stormont Vail Health’s outreach clinic services in Manhattan will temporarily relocate to Geary Community Hospital and Rural Health Clinic in Junction City. This will continue through August 2023, when the Stormont Vail Health Manhattan Campus building is completed and the outreach clinic services will be provided there.

The need for this temporary relocation is because Manhattan space has become full as we have added new team members and providers.

Stormont Vail Health is currently managing the operations of Geary Community Hospital, with plans to fully operate the facility beginning Jan. 1, 2023. The outreach clinics will be at 1110 St. Mary’s Road, Junction City, in the Medical Arts Building I, Suite 207 (part of the Geary Community Hospital building complex.)

Patients who have outreach clinic appointments have been notified of the location change. We appreciate the patients, providers and team members for being flexible and changing to this new location temporarily.

We together,
Dr. Kenagy
