Stormont Vail Health Leads the Way with Robotic-Assisted Bronchoscopy in Topeka

Stormont Vail Health is excited to announce that it has introduced the Ion robotic-assisted bronchoscopy platform from Intuitive. The Stormont Vail pulmonary team has been performing procedures since April 2025, becoming the first health system in Topeka to offer this cutting-edge technology for lung nodule biopsy and diagnosis. Ion robotic-assisted bronchoscopy enables minimally invasive access to peripheral lung nodules with enhanced precision and stability, bringing the future of lung care to our region.

What is Ion and How Does It Help?

Ion is a robot-guided system combining an ultra-thin, flexible tube with computer-based navigation. Instead of relying on traditional tools, Ion’s camera and sensors give doctors a clear, real-time view of the airways, allowing them to steer directly to small areas in the lung that could not be reached easily before. Ion means less risk, a smaller incision, and a more comfortable patient experience.

Detecting Lung Cancer Earlier

Lung nodules – small spots on the lung – can be cancerous, but many are located deep in the lung, where traditional tools struggle to reach. By guiding the robotic tube all the way into those tighter outer airways, Ion helps doctors take a tissue sample safely and accurately.

“Our team has dedicated significant effort to launching this program and building a strong foundation for its success,” said Dr. Hassan Taha, Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care physician at Stormont Vail Health. “Since April, our pulmonary team has used the Ion, seeing firsthand the excellent outcomes. Four of those patients with a diagnosis of lung cancer have now had surgery earlier than would have previously been possible. Finding cancer this early improves outcomes and clearly makes a big difference for our patients and their families.”

Why This Matters for Topeka

Stormont Vail Health invests in new technology to keep quality care close to home. By being the first in Topeka to offer Ion, the health system ensures local patients won’t have to travel elsewhere for this level of lung care. With the combination of early diagnosis and state-of-the-art technology, CT scanning in the operating room, and ultrasound technology, our patients are provided with the best care available in the region. The Stormont Vail pulmonary team is actively working with primary care doctors to identify patients who might benefit from this new option.
