Stormont Vail Health Celebrates 50 Years of Cardiothoracic Surgery Excellence

Stormont Vail Health proudly marks a major milestone: 50 years of cardiothoracic surgery, celebrating five decades of innovation, teamwork, and life-changing care for patients across northeast Kansas.

Since performing its first cardiothoracic procedure in 1975, Stormont Vail has grown into a regional leader in heart care—introducing advanced surgical techniques, building multidisciplinary teams, and investing in technology that improves outcomes and enhances patient experience.

“This milestone reflects the dedication of countless clinicians, nurses, and staff who have worked tirelessly to advance heart health in our community,” said Mark Slyter, Stormont Vail CEO, “We honor their legacy and look forward to the next 50 years of innovation.”

Today, Stormont Vail’s Heart Care program continues to set the standard for compassionate, cutting-edge care, offering advanced comprehensive heart imaging, new pulsed field ablation (PFA) treatment for AFib, Kansas’s only ACC-accredited TAVR program, and national recognitions for heart attack care.
