Patient, Team Member, Inspiration: Alofa’s Bariatric Surgery Story

When You Give Your Best, You Deserve the Best

Alofa is more than a success story—she’s one of us.

As a patient care technician (PCT) with our Perioperative Services team, Alofa Mariner gives her best every day. With support from our Weight Management program and bariatric surgery, she lost more than 150 pounds—and gained newfound energy, confidence, and joy in everyday activities and small moments.

We’re proud to see her show up for herself—and receive the best in return!

First Steps to a Fresh Start

Alofa started her journey with the Stormont Vail Health Weight Management program in 2015 at 307 pounds. After a severe COVID-19 infection and ongoing health challenges, including a suspected hernia, she moved forward with gastric bypass after years of consideration.

Initially, she considered having the procedure at a different facility, concerned about how being a patient might impact her relationships with her colleagues on the Surgical Care team. However, she ultimately chose Stormont Vail because of the insurance coverage and her rapport with the surgery team during her previous visits.

150 Pounds Lost—And Much More Gained

While bariatric surgery is effective for weight loss and improving physical health, it can lead to significant mental and physical changes. Patients may experience side effects like mood swings and changes in metabolism, which can impact their recovery. For Alofa, who is Samoan, hair holds deep meaning and is considered sacred in her culture. When she experienced hair loss—a common side effect of bariatric surgery—it affected her greatly.

“Going from long to short hair was traumatic—but a good thing for me to go through. It showed me I can do it. I don’t need this hair; it’ll grow back.”

She embraced a positive attitude and focused on her long-term well-being. Throughout the healing process, she followed her health plan, which included getting enough vitamins and protein and staying hydrated.

Before her surgery, Alofa was concerned about how her ability to exercise would change. However, her healthcare team provided valuable guidance and support, advising her to reintroduce exercise gradually into her routine. Thanks to her strong pain tolerance and the support of her family, she adjusted to her new lifestyle with relative ease.

Living Her Best Life—At Work and Beyond

Since her surgery, Alofa has enjoyed much better health. She no longer relies on diabetes medications or water pills and has more energy for everyday life. She exercises three to four times a week, incorporating cardio and strength training.

“There are days when you’re constantly running in the hospital,” Alofa said. “Now, I can briskly walk without thinking of people judging. I have so much more energy. I feel like I can run all day long and not have to lie down and take a nap. And I can also cross my legs!”

Small accomplishments like these show that every win is worth celebrating—no matter how small they seem.

Alofa’s Advice

Alofa’s dedication, persistence, and resilience allowed her to reclaim her health, energy, and joy. She encourages anyone considering this journey to research their options thoroughly and talk openly with their healthcare providers.
