Emporia Campus Groundbreaking Celebration

Thank you to everyone who joined us last Friday to celebrate the groundbreaking of our future Emporia Campus. It was a great morning recognizing this important step forward for expanding access to care in the Emporia community—a community we’ve been serving for more than 30 years.
Located at 18th Street and Road G, the new campus represents Stormont Vail Health’s continued commitment to delivering high-quality care close to home. Construction is now underway, and we look forward to sharing updates as the project progresses.

Carol Perry Granted Honorary Doctorate of Public Service

Carol Perry, retired Stormont Vail Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Public Service by Washburn University. The honor was presented during the Harmony J. Hines School of Nursing graduation in White Concert Hall last Friday.
Carol is a 1983 graduate of the Washburn School of Nursing and received her Master of Science in Management from Baker University. She devoted her entire 40-year nursing career to Stormont Vail Health, where her leadership helped shape patient care, nursing excellence and workforce development across the region.
Carol started her career as a student nurse technician, and later as a registered nurse in Labor and Delivery. She moved into leadership roles within the maternal/child service line, then case management, performance improvement and the hospitalist program.
She was appointed Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer in 2001, then promoted to Senior Vice President and CNO in 2019. Under Carol’s leadership, Stormont Vail achieved Magnet designation four times, reflecting sustained excellence in nursing practice and patient outcomes. Carol retired in 2024 and remains active in her commitment to Kansas healthcare and nursing education.
Two other Washburn graduates receiving honorary doctorates from Washburn were:
- Jim Slattery, Honorary Doctorate of Law, who was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives while a law student and served three terms and was speaker pro tem from 1977—79. He later served six terms in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1983 to 1995.
Dr. Joe Anthony “Tony” Ware, Honorary Doctorate of Science, who built a distinguished career as a cardiologist, physician-scientist and pharmaceutical executive whose work has advanced cardiovascular medicine and improved patient care worldwide.
Enhancing Patient Care Through Virtual Nursing

We’re enhancing patient care through an expanded virtual nursing program that blends innovative technology with experienced human care.
Virtual nurses connect with patients through secure cameras and web-based technology to assist with admissions, discharges, medication support, and patient education. The program also helps strengthen communication between bedside nurses, physicians, specialists, and family members who may not be able to be present in person.
Recent upgrades allow for integrated translation services, making it easier to support Spanish-speaking patients and others who need language assistance.
Staffed by experienced Stormont Vail Health nurses, the virtual nursing team helps relieve some bedside tasks, allowing in-room nurses to focus more on hands-on, direct patient care.
