Stormont Vail Health Reverified as Level II Trauma Center
Stormont Vail Health is proud to announce the successful completion of its trauma center reverification by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Committee on Trauma, a nationally recognized gold standard for trauma care excellence. This rigorous review assesses a hospital’s ability to deliver timely, coordinated, and expert care to severely injured patients. The final report from the ACS praised Stormont Vail for its strong clinical performance, dedication to continuous improvement, and strength in trauma systems and education. These strengths reflect the dedication of our physicians, nurses, staff, and the vital support of our hospital leadership.
Since earning its Level II Trauma Center verification in 2009, Stormont Vail has remained the region’s most trusted provider of emergency and specialty care. Stormont Vail serves a wide area, including Topeka, surrounding communities, and rural hospitals that rely on timely transfers for complex cases.
“Trauma doesn’t discriminate — it can happen to anyone, at any time. Our team is proud to provide expert, compassionate care not only to our neighbors here in Topeka, but to patients throughout Northeast Kansas and beyond,” said Tamine Gogel APRN-C and Director of Trauma Services at Stormont Vail. “The verification underscores our long-standing dedication to delivering evidence-based trauma care close to home. Verification is not a finish line — it’s a milestone. We are already working on the next steps to keep improving. Our trauma center is committed to doing whatever it takes to bring the best care possible to our region.”
Over the past five years, the Stormont Vail Trauma Program has experienced significant growth, increasing from approximately 2,000 patients annually to more than 3,000. The trauma team delivers expert care for a broad range of injuries, from motor vehicle collisions and falls to penetrating trauma and surgical emergencies.
Verified trauma centers must meet the essential criteria as outlined by the ACS. Among the many requirements necessary for Level II status is a Trauma Response Team composed of: board certified general and trauma surgeons, emergency medicine physicians, trauma advanced practice providers, ED nurses, critical care nurses, rapid response nurses, anesthesia staff, respiratory therapy, pharmacists, lab, blood bank, social work, security, radiology techs, and chaplain services. This verification will last through April 14, 2028.
