We Celebrate Dominic Katsbulas, RN, DAISY Award Recipient

Nurses go above and beyond daily to provide patients and families with excellent care. For Dominic Katsbulas, RN, at the Stormont Vail Health Topeka Campus Hospital Intermediate Care Unit, taking time to alleviate patients’ worries during hospitalization is intuitive. For this reason, we celebrate Dominic for receiving the DAISY Award!

The DAISY Award celebrates and recognizes nurses who go the extra mile as a way to thank them for the care and compassion they provide. Dominic, who has provided outstanding care at Stormont Vail since 2016, received two nominations from two separate patients he cared for in the IMCU.

In the IMCU, providers treat patients with severe, complex medical conditions who don’t need the level of care required from the Intensive Care Unit. For patients previously in the ICU, transitioning to the IMCU is an important milestone in their recovery.

In many cases, admission to the IMCU means patients are one step closer to leaving the hospital and going home. Even so, IMCU admission can still bring a great deal of stress, confusion, and anxiety – all of which can affect the recovery process and overall patient experience.

IMCU providers can ease these negative emotions and support patients by creating a stable environment promoting smoother recovery. For Dominic, that meant giving each patient extra time to ask questions and get much-needed reassurance.

“Dominic had a lot of patience with me,” one patient wrote in their nomination. “I had many questions that I wanted answered. Dominic took the time to explain what was happening with the patient and ensured I was there when the doctor was in the room. Overall, he reassured me that I would feel comfortable enough to go home and rest with the care given.”

Dominic, congratulations on winning the DAISY Award! The attention you give each patient is inspiring and reminds us why small moments matter. We admire and appreciate your dedication to your profession, our patients, and our organization.

Nomination #1

Dominic was a very attentive nurse to my relative during their stay in the IMC. I could tell he deeply cared for his patients and was very good at explaining outcomes to me, which relieved my stress and anxiety about the whole situation. I believe Dominic had gotten different patients a few days later, but he still made sure to come and say hi to my relative and me. We appreciate the time he took to check in on us. I was very thankful for his sincerity during this difficult time for my relative and me.
