We Celebrate Martin Gray: March 2025 Person of the Moment

During a crisis, Martin Gray, a security officer at Stormont Vail Hospital, brought a level of humanity to his role that didn’t just impact a patient’s experience, but saved their life. His willingness to earn a patient’s trust, listen to their concerns, and even fulfill a heartfelt request for a hug define our third tenet: “Together, we own patient safety and experience by providing safe, high-quality care with a kind and generous spirit.”

Martin inspires us to foster an environment where patients feel safe and valued, encouraging them to communicate their needs more comfortably. Enhanced communication leads to more accurate assessments and timely interventions, ultimately improving patient outcomes.

In early February, a patient arrived at the Emergency Department (ED) but left before being seen. The individual walked to the top of the parking garage and climbed out onto the ledge, threatening to jump. Officer Martin Gray was dispatched to the scene and quickly arrived to find the patient on the ledge.

Martin took the time to talk with the patient and earn his trust. Through his efforts, Martin was able to de-escalate the situation, leading the patient to voluntarily step down from the ledge. Before agreeing to come down, the patient requested a hug from Martin as a condition for his surrender. Martin kindly agreed and hugged the patient before placing him in the patrol vehicle to drive him back to the ED.

After transporting the patient back to the ED, Martin personally accompanied him inside and down to his room. Martin’s kindness toward this patient demonstrates how everyone, regardless of our position, can positively impact a patient’s experience and potentially save a life.
