Stormont Vail Team Members Share How Their Careers Started

Stormont Vail Health team members are inspiring students and parents across Kansas to learn more about careers in healthcare by sharing their own experiences.

Through the Hirepaths website, Stormont Vail team members are featured in videos in which they share their stories about how they got started in healthcare. The videos are informational for parents, guardians and young people as they decide a career path after high school. Parents and guardians often play a large role in a child’s exposure to career possibilities and shaping lifelong perceptions about different occupations, according to Hirepaths. Successful careers may be launched through on-the-job training programs, apprenticeships, or technical and community college education.

Here are Stormont Vail team members who recently shared their stories, with links to their videos:

  • Laura Caby, Emergency Department Charge Nurse – Laura shares how she always wanted to be a nurse like her mom. She loves the pace of the ED and helping patients receive timely care. She is honored to be a nurse and at the side of those who need care.
  • Melinda Herrig, Enterostomal Therapy Charge Nurse – Melinda started her career as a barber, but then followed her mother’s footsteps to be a nurse. She now loves taking care of patients and making them feel better.
  • Ronald J. Gentry, Facilities Management Director – After growing up on a farm and getting electrical training, his grandmother told him about an advertisement for an electrician job at Stormont Vail. He is now over all facilities at Stormont Vail.
  • Tiffany Beyer, Talent Acquisition Manager – Tiffany moved from a career in venture capital to Stormont Vail where she says educational opportunities and tuition reimbursement can help with career development.
  • Carrie Cooley, Pharmacy Automation Technician – Carrie thought she was going to be a math teacher, but found her way to healthcare. She encourages others to ask questions and work hard – and she even though she isn’t in direct patient care, she is supporting patient care every day in her role.

In addition to information about a variety of careers to explore, the Hirepaths website has hundreds of activities for kids to learn more about industries and careers, from roleplaying, STEAM-based activities (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Math), to career activities in the community and Kansas field trips.
