Patient Stories

Open heart surgery is one option to replace an aortic valve, but at Stormont Vail Health, it's not the only one.

As the state's ONLY TAVR-certified hospital, we offer a minimally invasive alternative to traditional aortic valve replacement.

Cardiac Rehabilitation Program

Many of our patients are referred to the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program to help them recover from cardiothoracic surgery, as well as multiple conditions and surgeries. The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program staff follow patients through recovery, teach them about living a healthy lifestyle, and help them build up fitness and strength through exercise.

Cardiac Stress Test Mobile Unit

The specialists at the Cotton O’Neil Heart Center are committed to providing cardiovascular care to patients throughout all of northeast Kansas — not just in Topeka. Our Cardiac Stress Test Mobile Unit regularly visits patients in our surrounding communities to provide imaging services and stress tests.

Cardiac Stress Test Mobile Unit
Why it’s Important

You may need a nuclear stress test if you have signs or symptoms of heart disease such as chest pain or shortness of breath. A nuclear stress test may also be used to guide your treatment if you've been diagnosed with a heart condition.

Knowing how well your arteries are working lets doctors decide if they need to intervene to help improve blood flow to your heart.

How it Works

A nuclear stress test uses a small amount of radioactive material (tracer) and an imaging machine to create pictures showing the blood flow to your heart. The test measures blood flow while you are at rest and during an activity — walking on a treadmill — to show areas with poor blood flow or damage in your heart. If you are unable to walk on a treadmill, a chemically-induced stress condition may be performed instead. The entire process can take two or more hours.

The radiotracer used during a nuclear stress test helps your doctor determine your risk of a heart attack or other cardiac event if you have coronary artery disease.

In Your Community

Our Cardiac Stress Test Mobile Unit is on a two-week rotation to seven different communities around Topeka. The sites we visit are Washington, Seneca, Sabetha, Holton, Hiawatha, Wamego and Council Grove. The truck visits each city’s local community hospital, except for Holton, where it sits at the Holton Family Health Center.
