August 2022 Person of the Moment: Christina Barker

We want to give an immense congratulations to our August Person of the Moment, Christina Barker, RN! Not only does Christina give her all every day at Stormont Vail Health, but she takes her training and passion beyond the walls of our hospital.

While leading a Youth Mission Trip to Monterey, California, a great white shark attacked a swimmer while Christina and the group were on the beach. Without hesitation, she put her training as a trauma response nurse into action and helped to create a tourniquet out of shirts while also helping lead non-medical personnel who were there perform other life-saving activities. Because of Christina’s swift action with a group of others who were on the beach, the injured swimmer was transferred to a trauma center, received extensive treatment, and is recovering well after being attacked by a 17 foot great white.

“We are in awe of Christina’s bravery, leadership, and humility, and are so proud and thankful to have her as a part of the SVH family,” said Barker’s team mates.

You can hear Christina’s chilling experience on WIBW’s To Your Health segment here. She talks about why she is thankful she was there, how she keeps up with the swimmer today, what she’s learned from this experience, and what everyone can do to be prepared to help anyone who is severely bleeding.

We are so grateful to have Christina on our team who extends her care beyond our hospital walls. Thank you for being such an outstanding nurse and person, Christina! Congratulations!
