Behavioral Health

Behavioral Health covers a wider spectrum of care than many people realize. It includes not only mental health, but also behavioral disorders.

As the largest behavioral health provider in the Topeka region, we provide continued care, ranging from inpatient and outpatient treatments, to children, teenagers, adults and senior patients. Whether it’s a short-term intervention or ongoing therapy, we’re committed to the long-term health of our patients.

The Behavioral Health care teams at Stormont Vail Health are strongly integrated with many other patient areas, including Primary Care, Endocrinology, the Cancer Center, Pediatrics and the Heart Center. We work to make it easy to find a counselor or therapist when you’re being treated in another department.

We treat the whole person by taking care of your physical health and mental health. We will always keep your primary care provider updated on your visits and treatments with our behavioral health specialists. We also encourage you to keep seeing your primary care provider throughout your treatment for well-balanced care (annual physicals, flu shots, etc.).

Conditions We Treat

Our specialists provide treatment for a broad range of conditions, including:

  • Depression, seasonal affective disorder, postpartum depression and bipolar (manic-depressive) disorder
  • Generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder and social anxiety disorder
  • Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children, teenagers and adults
  • More severe disorders such as schizophrenia, delusions or hallucinations

Our Treatments and Services

Some people seek behavioral health care when the situation is urgent – for example, the patient has lost touch with reality or can’t refrain from actions that are dangerous to themselves or other people. In these situations, we offer inpatient programs to help provide safety, security and stabilization for patients.

More commonly, many people are facing recurring thoughts or emotions that are making everyday life difficult. For example, after the loss of a loved one, you might experience long-term depression, or prolonged or complicated grief. In these situations, we provide outpatient psychiatric intervention.

No matter what struggle you are having, we encourage you to call us and let our professionals help you decide what care you need.

Partner of the Community

The Behavioral Health Center invites community providers at smaller mental health practices to training events in integrated behavioral health care—providing counseling and mental health services in specific care settings. For example, a provider might learn more about depression screenings and treatment for those receiving long-term home health care.

We partner with the Topeka Police Department to provide crisis intervention team training. We provide 40 hours of training to law enforcement officers and other associated disciplines to work more effectively with those who have mental illness.

Meet Our Psychiatrists and Psychologists

Our psychiatrists, social workers, therapists, and nurses work together to develop a care plan tailored to your unique needs. We recognize the importance of family, friends and community to healthy living, so we involve family members in the therapy and connect patients with resources in the community.
