Grand Rounds Programs

Did you know Stormont Vail Health offers multiple opportunities every month for no-cost, continuing education credit? Did you know you can participate in these opportunities remotely via Skype? The Continuing Professional Development team at Stormont Vail presents five regularly scheduled Grand Rounds programs on a monthly or bi-monthly basis, most of which are also available via Skype: Hospitalists Grand Rounds, Primary Care Grand Rounds, Pharmacy Grand Rounds, Pediatric Grand Rounds and Trauma Grand Rounds. The topics in each of the series are selected to meet the needs of the target audience named in the title, and all specialties are welcome to attend.

Hospitalists Grand Rounds take place every other month, beginning in February, on the first Thursday, from noon-1 p.m. This series covers topics often seen in the hospital setting. Past presentations include lectures on hyponatremia, asthma, atrial septal defect and patent foramen ovale closures, interventional pain management, hand bites, acute red eye, liver disease and dizziness complaints.

Primary Care Grand Rounds take place on the second Tuesday of each month, from noon-1 p.m. This series covers topics often seen in the primary care ambulatory setting. Past presentations include lectures on polycystic ovary syndrome, palliative medicine, opiate crisis, wound management, oncology survivorship, bronchiolitis guidelines and cerebrovascular disease.

Pharmacy Grand Rounds take place every other month beginning in January, on the third Tuesday, from noon-1 p.m. This series covers developments and updates related to pharmaceutical usage in the provision of health care. Past presentations include lectures on community acquired pneumonia, influenza and whooping cough, opioid epidemic, pain treatment options, pediatric respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), medication safety, vancomycin dosing, antimicrobial stewardship, and medication reconciliation.

Pediatric Grand Rounds take place on the third Wednesday of each month, from 9-11 a.m. This series covers pediatric topics often seen in the hospital and ambulatory settings. Past presentations include lectures on antibiotic stewardship and immunizations, eating disorders, adolescent anxiety and depression, orthodontics, abdominal conditions, substance use and abuse, Kawasaki disease, intestinal rehabilitation, suicide prevention in teens, active shooter, and amblyopia and strabismus.

Trauma Grand Rounds take place every other month beginning in February, on the second Wednesday, from 7-8 a.m. This series covers topics often seen in the trauma and critical care settings. Past presentations include lectures on traumatic brain injury, concussion, aspiration pneumonia, facial fractures, burn patients and plastic surgery.

All of the Grand Rounds are open to both internal and external health care professionals, and provide continuing education credits for physicians, nurses and APRNs. Many of the presentations also provide continuing education credits for those in the social work and/or respiratory therapy fields, as well. The live presentations are held in the Pozez Education Center at Stormont Vail Hospital. The broadcast presentations can be accessed remotely through Skype and by phone.
