Forensics in a Healthcare Setting

When you hear the word ‘forensics’, what comes to mind? Maybe one of the legendary TV crime shows, like NCIS, fingerprint stations, or a scientist in a white lab coat?

At Stormont Vail Health, we think about being a trend-setter in health care and a safe haven for our patients.

Less than 10% of hospitals across the United States have a forensic nurse. We have nine at Stormont Vail. Our forensic team helps and evaluates patients in the hospital and clinics that have been victims of violence or with patients who have been victims of sexual assault. Additionally, our forensic nurses are able to perform medical exams and gather evidence for these patients, if they wish. By performing their duties quickly and efficiently, they allow for other hospital team members to do the same; this in turn, means extraordinary care for our patients right when they need it.

If you have been a patient or family member at Stormont Vail, then you know one of our deepest values kept is Quality. We work diligently to create an environment of trust, comfort, and confidence brought about by a competent, compassionate, and caring team. This value – this promise – extends to every person in our community.

“Our forensic nurses provide comprehensive care to victims of violence; their roles are unbelievably vital to the complete care of our community,” remarked Forensic Nurse Supervisor, Sarah Evans-Simpson, MSN-FN, RN, TCRN, SANE-A. “They take the responsibilities of conducting medical forensic exams, evidence collection, and courtroom testimony extremely seriously while still providing the compassion and sensitivity that is essential to their interactions with survivors.

Sarah and her team take great pride in the work they do and feel lucky to be able to provide this forensic care to the patients of Stormont Vail.

“Our team is phenomenal. They have been through a lot of changes in the last year and they are rolling with it and excelling. I couldn’t do the work I do and love without my amazing team and I want them to know how much they are truly appreciated!”

We feel the same way – thank you, forensic nurses and team members for always providing quality care.
