Maternal Fetal Medicine at Stormont-Vail HealthCare provides a variety of consultative services for the high-risk mother and fetus. The Maternal Fetal Medicine Clinic is located in Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center and is accessed through referral from the primary care physician or obstetrician who provides ongoing obstetric care for the mother.
Maternal Fetal Medicine provides an increased level of diagnosis and care for pregnant women when there may be questions about ultrasound findings, maternal health conditions, questions or concerns regarding earlier pregnancy losses, or questions about medications and effects on pregnancies.
Consultation is available for medical complications that may include, but is not limited to pregnancy-induced hypertension, diabetes, pre-term labor, premature rupture of membranes, insufficient cervix, multiple pregnancy and amniotic fluid disorders. Ultrasound and amniocentesis may be used in gathering information to assist in providing the most complete care possible.
The Maternal Fetal Medicine team started in 1988 and now includes two perinatologists, two genetic counselors (the only genetic counselors in Topeka), two level II sonographers, two Registered Nurses, a Licensed Practical Nurse, a certified midwife and social worker. In addition, Stormont-Vail has partnered with six obstetricians from Lincoln Center OBGYN, P.A. in Topeka to develop a High Risk Maternity Team to assist in the care of high-risk inpatients.
Maternal Fetal Medicine also works closely with Stormont-Vail’s neonatologists, Neonatal Intensive Care staff, Birthplace staff, dietitians, educators, and outcome coordinators at Stormont-Vail HealthCare.
