Congratulations to Mike Nixon on Retirement

Congratulations to Mike Nixon, System Director of IT Security, who will retire April 30. Mike first joined Stormont Vail Health as the Information Security Administrator in 2017, and then became the System Director of IT Security in December 2018. He has been a key team player in keeping our IT environment safe and operational. Prior to his years with Stormont Vail Health, Mike served in an Active Duty position with the Air Force, the Kansas Juvenile Justice Authority, the Kansas Highway Patrol, and the Kansas Legislative Division of Post Audit.  In retirement, Mike plans to balance his time between his grandkids, travel, fishing, gaming, photography, and spending time improving the land around his pond.  Thank you for your years of service, Mike!

Stormont Vail Health Receives KAHCC Awards

Congratulations to the Stormont Vail Health Marketing and Communications team for winning a 2026 Emerald Award for the creation of the Paw Squad Calendar featuring the therapy dogs who visit our hospitals, clinics and team. In addition, the Marketing team received an Emerald Certificate of Merit for its Philanthropy and Faith campaign – a video and postcard package that told of the inspiration and faith of the two women, Jane C. Stormont and Ellen Vail, who started Topeka hospitals that later evolved into Stormont Vail Health of today. The awards were presented at the spring conference of the Kansas Association of Health Care Communicators (KAHCC), where Ryan Bishop (at right) and Kelsey Papps (center), Marketing team members, accepted the awards.

We Support the Dani Renner Memorial Scholarship

When you dine at The Pennant’s Spotlight Table from April 20 to May 17, 10% of all sales from that table during that time will support the Dani Renner Memorial Scholarship, created in memory of a beloved Stormont Vail Health cardiac sonographer whose kindness touched so many. The Pennant is located at 915 S. Kansas Ave. in Topeka.

You can also make a donation through the Foundation: Make a Gift. Select “Dani Renner Memorial Scholarship” under Gift Designation

Sports Physical Day Scores Big for Young Athletes

Our Orthopedics and Sports Medicine team is here to help local middle and high school athletes stay healthy and safe this season with $20 sports physicals at Kanza Park from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2026.

And here’s an extra win: $10 of every sports physical goes to the athlete’s school!

Walk with an APP in Junction City: May 2, 2026

If you’re in Junction City or Manhattan, Walk with an APP offers a low-pressure way to connect with APRN Michelle Boggs, behavioral health specialist, while learning more about stress, mental health, and when it may help to seek care.

Adult Intensive Outpatient Program: Flexible, Structured Support

Stormont Vail Behavioral Health’s Adult Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a flexible, virtual path to healing for adults who need structured support. This therapist-led, group-based program helps participants build coping skills, strengthen emotional resilience, and improve overall well-being.

If  you know someone who may benefit from skills‑focused, structured support in a virtual format, encourage them to call (785) 270‑4630 or visit Adult Behavioral Health Programs to learn more.

A Day Behind the Scenes at Stormont Vail Hospital

Community leaders recently stepped inside Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka for the Stormont Vail Foundation’s A Day in the Life event—a behind‑the‑scenes experience highlighting the people, places, and purpose behind patient care.

From the Simulation Lab and OR to the NICU and helipad, guests gained insight into the expertise, coordination, and dedication required to deliver high‑quality care across our organization. Thank you to all who participated and worked to ensure this day was a success.

“To Your Health” on WIBW-TV: Last Week’s Segment

Annie Buckland, Injury Prevention Coordinator discussed strategies for senior injury prevention in last week’s To Your Health segment.

Our “To Your Health” segments air at 10 p.m. on WIBW-TV, Channel 13. The segment typically repeats at 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. Fridays on 13 News This Morning and is posted on wibw.com.
