Stormont Vail Health to Light Up Blue for World Drowning Prevention Day

On Friday, July 25, 2025, Stormont Vail Health will join a global movement to recognize World Drowning Prevention Day by lighting Stormont Vail Hospital blue to support the World Health Organization’s campaign to raise awareness and promote water safety.

This year’s theme, “Anyone can drown, no one should,” highlights the importance of community education and safety efforts. Drowning is a preventable public health issue that affects people of all ages and backgrounds.

“Drowning is silent, swift, and preventable,” said Annie Buckland, BSN, RN, TCRN, Stormont Vail Trauma Care team member, Violence and Injury Prevention Coordinator, and Trauma Survivor Network Coordinator. “Water safety is not just for kids—it’s a lifelong habit.”

Buckland recommends simple water safety tips, such as:

  • Wear bright swimwear for better visibility
  • Assign a designated “Water Watcher” when children are swimming
  • Sign up for swim lessons at local community centers
  • Always enter water feet first
  • Avoid breath-holding games

Community members are invited to share their stories and tips on social media using the hashtag #DrowningPrevention and to join the effort by wearing blue or lighting up their homes and businesses.
