Sunflower Award for Extraordinary Nursing Support Staff

The Sunflower Award recognizes Stormont Vail Health nursing support staff as key players in patient care delivery by assisting nurses and other healthcare providers. Like sunflowers reaching toward the sky, these paraprofessionals stand out for their positivity, vibrance, and warmth.

Patients and their family members

Who can receive a nomination?

  • Medical Assistants (MAs)
  • Patient Care Technicians (PCTs)
  • Patient Safety Monitors (PSMs)

Candidates must demonstrate:

  • Outstanding care and service to patients, families, and team members
  • Support for our mission of excellence and commitment to safety
  • Empathy and respect toward patients, their families, and team members

Examples

  • An MA goes the extra mile to communicate with a patient with a hearing impairment. She uses written materials and visual aids to explain the patient’s procedures and medications, helping them feel informed and respected.
  • A PCT notices a patient experiencing side effects from medication and reports it to the nursing team. He advocates to reevaluate the patient’s treatment plan, resulting in adjustments that improve their comfort and recovery.
  • A PSM learns about a patient's culture and dietary needs. They work with the dietitian to include traditional foods in the patient's meal plan, making them feel respected and valued during their stay.
