We Celebrate Caitlyn Viergever, DAISY Award Winner

We’re proud to celebrate Caitlyn Viergever, an RN at the Cotton O’Neil Cancer Center, for receiving a DAISY Award!

When a patient had a rare reaction to a routine medication, Caitlyn didn’t hesitate to jump into action. Her quick thinking and calm presence turned a frightening moment into one of trust and safety.

Read her nomination and see how her dedication reflects the best of our team’s values.

Caitlyn’s DAISY Nomination

“Earlier this year, I had a sudden and fast reaction to a medication in the CA treatment room. I had been getting this medication every month for about a year without difficulty. My injections were given, and I quickly started to feel ill. Caitlyn acted so quickly and picked up that something wasn’t ‘right’ that before I realized it, several other nurses were in the room as well as Dr. Hashmi. My port was accessed, and I was getting fluids/medications VERY quickly. As a CA patient and a nurse, my thoughts are usually to check that things are being done and/or HOW things are being done.

However, the way Caitlyn recognized I wasn’t feeling well, had me taken care of so well, I found myself thinking… ‘I don’t have to worry about this… she’s got me covered… thank God, she [Caitlyn] is good!’

I learned later that my reaction to this medication is rare, and in fact has been seen at the CA Center one other time. Nurses can get complacent. Caitlyn has given this medication many, many times and never seen this reaction before. I am so grateful of Caitlyn’s background in the ED [emergency department] and her staying sharp when caring for me and her other patients. When I see her now, she remembers me, the unusual reaction, and we can joke about it. However, it could have resulted in a much different outcome!!

I can’t think of a better reason for a nurse to be recognized. Caitlyn actually put me at ease during the event!! I knew I was being well taken care of! There is NOTHING better than that feeling!”
