We Together: A Communication of Stormont Vail Health (Apr 11, 2023)

Dear Community Partners,

Here are today’s updates:

  • From Topeka to Washington, D.C.
  • Welcome Baby Jubilee – A Special Delivery
  • “Just Another Magnet Monday” Podcast – Episode 6: Evidence-Based Practice

From Topeka to Washington, D.C.

Stormont Vail Health and Baker University School of Nursing were well represented on Capitol Hill recently when Baker Dean Libby Rosen, Dustin Thiessen, Simulation Lab Coordinator who is working on his MSN degree at Baker, and Jason Coffman, Patient Care Technician at Stormont Vail and a senior in the Baker BSN program, were in Washington, D.C. for nursing events and to meet with Congressional leaders.

Dustin and Jason attended the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Student Policy Summit, while Libby attended the AACN Annual Deans Conference.

They were joined by Dr. Cheryl Geifer, Director for Pittsburg State School of Nursing in Fort Scott. She accompanied them to the Hill as the legislative liaison for the Kansas Association of Collegiate Nursing. They met with aides of Senators Roger Marshall and Jerry Moran, then with Rep. Jake LaTurner.

Topics of discussion were the request for funding for Title VIII Nursing workforce development, and NINR-research for FY 24 to support research that addresses strategic imperatives, such as health equity and social determinants of health. The group also requested support for the Future Advancement of Academic Nursing (FAAN) Act, which invests in nursing education pathways. It seeks to enroll and retain nursing students, hire and retain a diverse faculty to educate the future nursing workforce, modernize technology and educational infrastructure, and support schools of nursing and partnerships with facilities that provide health care. The group also made a request for sustaining and preserving federal student loan programs.

Thank you to this trio for representing Stormont Vail and Baker School of Nursing on these important topics. Thank you also to the Stormont Vail Health Foundation for providing funding for the students through the Baker Student Leadership Fund.

Welcome Baby Jubilee – A Special Delivery

Stormont Vail Health is looking forward to hosting new and expecting families to the Pozez Education Center at the Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka on April 16 from 2 – 4 p.m.

This free event gives new moms, expecting moms, and women who are thinking about having a baby the chance to meet our team, tour the Birthplace, learn more about Neonatal Intensive Care, the Breastfeeding Clinic, and hear about resources and services that are available in the community.

Attendees should enter through Pozez and can park in the hospital parking garage. Dads, grandparents, partners, and family members who will spend time with the baby are welcome to attend and will have the opportunity to get their Tdap vaccination. Tdap is a vaccination that helps prevent tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis and is highly recommended for anyone who will be in the presence of a new born.

“Just Another Magnet Monday” Podcast – Episode 6: Evidence-Based Practice

Episode six of Just Another Magnet Monday dives into Evidence-Based Practice, developing and improving knowledge to drive change, the power of collaboration, and nurse residency. Carol Perry, Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer, MollyPatt Eyestone, Marketing and Communications, and Ashley Seematter, RN, MSN, Assistant Professor at the Baker University School of Nursing, talk about how evidence-based practice impacts a patient’s experience and how you can be part of the next process improvement model by being curios.

This is a great episode to listen to and discuss with each other how you can use your questions to create change at our organization and beyond.  Magnet Mondays have been prepared to get us ready for Stormont Vail Health’s American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet Site Visit on May 1-3.

You can listen to episode six of Just Another Magnet Monday here on stormontvail.org, here on SVnet, or through Apple. You can also listen while you’re on the go, on your personal devices, through Spotify – just search “Just Another Magnet Monday.”

We together,
Dr. Kenagy
