Celebration of Life Event Honors Organ, Eye and Tissue Donors

A Celebration of Life for the families of those who have given the selfless gift of organ, eye and tissue donation will be held from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. today in Centennial C in Pozez Education Center and the Pavilion lobby of Stormont Vail’s Topeka hospital.

During this event, the loved ones of donors are invited to view a short video, enjoy refreshments and interact with the Gift of Life Memorial Wall, which is located in the first floor Pavilion lobby. The interactive Memorial Wall is where names and biographies of donors are shared, and information is presented about the importance of organ donation.

Along with Stormont Vail Health, the event is sponsored by Midwest Transplant Network and Saving Sight. MTN will have their aftercare support team available to provide information about resources and ongoing support available to families.

Jana Tenbrink, RN, Director of Critical Care Services, has been meeting with families the past several months to glean information for the biographies of donors shared on the Memorial Wall.

“It has been meaningful to me to hear their loved ones’ stories. It’s important for them to talk about their loved ones and to share,” she says.

Jana notes that donor families may still be experiencing grief, but the Celebration of Life event offers them the opportunity to return to the hospital and to memorialize their loved one in a more relaxed setting and to gain some closure.
