KansasWorks State Board Meets at Stormont Vail Health

The KansasWorks State Board, which is charged to connect all services into a comprehensive workforce system and be the organizer of those connections, met at Stormont Vail Health Wednesday. All state board members are appointed by Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly and represent a diverse cross section of business, labor, education, vocational rehabilitation, economic development and the public from across the state.

In addition to holding their regular meeting, the KansasWorks State Board took a tour of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the helipad, and I had an opportunity to tell them about the great work and care occurring at Stormont Vail Health.

The board includes Stormont Vail Health’s Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer Carol Perry. Carol was honored Wednesday by the board with an outstanding service award on behalf of the Kansas Department of Commerce. The meeting on Wednesday was her last as she is retiring from Stormont Vail Friday after a 44-year career. A retirement reception in her honor will be 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. today in Administration, second floor of the Topeka hospital.

Surgeon Partha Bhurtel, M.D., MBBS, FACS, along with a patient, will share information about the Stormont Vail Bariatric Surgery and Weight Management Program, on tonight’s WIBW-TV “To Your Health” segment. The segment will air at 10 p.m. on WIBW-TV, Channel 13. The segment will typically repeat at 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. Fridays on 13 News This Morning and be posted on wibw.com.

Tonight’s segment will share how patients seeking surgical treatment for obesity and its related conditions, can receive that care at Stormont Vail through its nationally accredited program meeting standards for patient safety and quality.

Stormont Vail’s bariatric and weight management program was recently reaccredited as a Comprehensive Center with Obesity Medicine Qualifications by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP®), a joint Quality Program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).

In addition, Dr. Bhurtel and Wael Khreiss, M.D., FACS, were recognized as verified surgeons.

The MBSAQIP standardsensure that metabolic and bariatric patients receive multidisciplinary medical care, which improves patient outcomes and long-term success. MBSAQIP-accredited centers offer preoperative and postoperative care designed specifically for patients with obesity.

Stormont Vail Health Welcomes Blue River Family Medicine Providers to Manhattan Campus

Stormont Vail Health is excited to announce that the physicians from Blue River Family Medicine will join the Stormont Vail team at our Manhattan Campus this summer. We are honored to welcome these esteemed providers, with their strong community ties, to our network to continue providing care in the area.

The addition of Karen Graves, D.O., Steffen Shamburg, M.D., Myra Wilson, P.A., and Samantha Davis, DNP, further strengthens our commitment to providing exceptional care to the Manhattan community and surrounding areas. Their expertise and dedication to patient well-being align perfectly with Stormont Vail’s mission and values.

Patients who receive care at Blue River Family Medicine can continue to see their trusted providers at the Stormont Vail Health Manhattan Campus at 1325 Research Park Drive, beginning Aug. 1, 2024. Patients who have future appointments beyond August should call (785) 537-2651 to be added to a scheduling list. When calling, patients need to select option 2, then option 1 to reach the scheduling team.

May Has Numerous Healthcare Recognitions

May is full of healthcare recognition days, weeks and months. These special days, weeks, and months allow us to highlight the importance of our teams’ work and raise awareness about various health conditions and initiatives throughout the year. We promote these recognitions in many ways across the organization and encourage departments to celebrate their teams in their areas. If this month highlights the work of someone you know on our team, take some time to wish them well!
