Stormont Vail Health Reverified as Level II Trauma Center
Stormont Vail Health is proud to announce the successful completion of its trauma center reverification by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Committee on Trauma, a nationally recognized gold standard for trauma care excellence. Since earning its Level II Trauma Center verification in 2009, Stormont Vail has remained the region’s most trusted provider of emergency and specialty care.
“Trauma doesn’t discriminate – it can happen to anyone, at any time. Our team is proud to provide expert, compassionate care not only to our neighbors here in Topeka, but to patients throughout Northeast Kansas and beyond,” Tamine Gogel, APRN-C, Director of Trauma Services. “The verification underscores our long-standing dedication to delivering evidence-based trauma care close to home. Verification is not a finish line – it’s a milestone. We are already working on the next steps to keep improving. Our trauma center is committed to doing whatever it takes to bring the best care possible to our region.” This verification runs through April 14, 2028.
Dr. Julia Gaston Joins Stormont Vail Health Flint Hills Campus
Dr. Julia Gaston, M.D., a board-certified OB/GYN with over 15 years of experience, has joined the Stormont Vail Health OB/GYN team. She will practice at Stormont Vail OB/GYN-Flint Hills, Junction City. Dr. Gaston found her interest in medicine while volunteering at a free clinic in college. After completing her undergraduate studies, she earned her medical degree at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. A turning point came in her third year of medical school in Wichita when she helped deliver 32 babies in 24 hours. “I got home, and instead of being exhausted, I was in this adrenaline rush,” Dr. Gaston said. “I had to do this every day for the rest of my life.”
As a former undergraduate teaching assistant and program educator for gifted children, Dr. Gaston knows how to communicate effectively with patients and fellow providers of all backgrounds and levels of understanding. “I want patients to feel that their concerns have been heard,” said Dr. Gaston. “If it’s a concern to them, it’s a concern to me. While we might not address it in that first visit, it will be addressed.” Dr. Gaston is accepting new patients. Call (785) 579-4466 to schedule an appointment.

Congratulations to DAISY Award Winner Keely Wilson
Congratulations again to Keely Wilson – in a previous issue we shouted her out for a previous DAISY Award win instead of her most recent award (yes, she’s that amazing!) Please see below to learn more about Keely’s well deserved second DAISY Award. We applaud Keely, a nurse in our Pediatric ICU, for receiving a DAISY Award after she supported a young patient following a suicide attempt.
“Our daughter was in there a few weeks ago for an attempted suicide, and Keeley was simply amazing. Keely really helped us navigate through everything, the anger and meanness coming from our child. Never making us feel judged and just being so understanding and loving through it all. She really helped make the most horrible situation for us a little more comfortable,” her nomination read.
