By taking the time to personally seek out a solution for a patient in distress, Candace Huber, Patient Experience Coordinator, turned a challenging situation into a remarkable opportunity for care and compassion. Her daily acts of kindness not only contribute to individual well-being, but a culture built on empathy and connection, reflecting our first tenant: “Together, we treat every patient, visitor, and team member with compassion and dignity.”

Read Candace’s Story

A nurse manager contacted Candace with a request to meet a patient who expressed frustration about a previous care experience at Stormont Vail Health. During the service recovery interaction, the patient mentioned not having shoes when he came to the hospital.

As the patient prepared for discharge, he worried about getting home without shoes in the freezing weather. Candace searched the Share Shop and Gift Shop for shoes that fit him, but couldn’t find anything suitable. After work, she took the time to purchase a pair with her own money. When Candace gave them to the patient, he was overjoyed to wear his own brand-new shoes when he left the hospital.

This story is one of many where Candace goes above and beyond for patients and team members. She regularly buys meals for visitors who appear to be struggling, reflecting her empathy. The number of personal phone charging cords she has given to people who stop by the Patient Experience office is astounding. Visit the Patient Experience office, and you’ll see multiple team members dropping by or waving enthusiastically at Candace from the hallway, showing the supportive atmosphere she helps create.

Candace consistently embodies our organization’s values. It feels inadequate to choose just one tenant to describe her, as she exemplifies them all. The joy she brings to our team inspires all of us to bring our best.
