Calm in Crisis. Care in Action.

When an emergency notification about an active shooter was issued, Alicia Criger, Emporia Clinic Nurse Manager, took charge with speed and composure. Within minutes, she locked down staff and patients in their current locations to keep everyone safe.

For two tense hours—marked by confusion and communication gaps—Alicia stayed calm, kept communication flowing with her team and leadership, and made safety her top priority.

When law enforcement cleared the building, Alicia personally confirmed every staff member was safe. Thankfully, the alert was a false alarm—but Alicia’s leadership and quick thinking were extraordinary.

About the Person of the Moment Award

This monthly award honors Stormont Vail Health team members who demonstrate Stormont Vail’s five tenets through meaningful actions that positively impact others.
